Another unusual way to use an umbrella! The "World Design Capital" program promotes and encourages the use of design to further the economic, social, cultural, and environmental development of the world's cities. Designated every two years, Helsinki was named in 2012, this year it is Mexico City.

Having an umbrella to protect against the weather as well as flying cinders was a good idea in the early days of train travel. But in this case even a white umbrella stayed clean because the little engine (Siemens, 1879) ran on electricity! Stamp issued for the international exhibit on transportation, 1979.

And this is the same little Siemens train at that first exhibition in 1879, this time commemorated on a Republic of Guinea stamp of 1996.

The Dublin and Kingstown Railway (D&KR), which opened in 1834, was Ireland's first railway. It linked Westland Row in Dublin with Kingstown Harbour in County Dublin. Stamp of 1984 celebrates 150 years.

(Hi Rod, Nice to know you are looking in on progress now and then. K.)

The umbrella as a symbol of protection in the other stamp of the set about the environmental forum, Montenegro, 2010. The country has many spectacular waterfalls, but I don't know which one this happens to be. Note that the umbrella has the image of a lily inside and note also the "Earth Friendly" logo.

Theodor Severin Kittelsen (1857-1914) was a Norwegian artist and illustrator. He is known for his beautiful paintings of nature and for his illustrations of children's stories, especially when trolls are involved. The artist did a "Selfportrait" on a sunny afternoon.

Thanks Rod, for Niagara Montenegro, louder than the big one? I wonder what it was originally called. K.

A lovely afternoon at one of Singapore's beaches - most of them man-made by filling in sand, such as the one at Sentosa. (Unusual to find a picture without thousands of bathers.)

This one is for Cursus: can you give us some information about this stamp which says it has no value for postage? Was money collected for some special purpose? (I stumbled upon the scan on ebay.)

Yes, Kris, I can give you some information.
1.- It's not a stamp, but a cinderella, issued on December, 27th, 1985 by Barcelona's Stamps and Coins mercants Gild.
2.- It was issued as a mini-sheet with 7 other cinderellas (4 with just Catalan text, 3 with images),devoted to late XIX and early XX century Catalan artists like Sert (he has some frescos on NYC's Rockefeller Center), Miró and Dalí. I guess, you've some references about them.
4.- It was part of a cinderellas' series showing Catalonia'a history. The series ran from 1977 up to early 90's.
5.- They were sold at "face value" at the Gild's stand on most Catalonia fairs.
This one was issued on the December 1985/January 1986 Barcelona's Xmas Children Fair
6.- Despite their name "segells de Catalunya" (Catalonia's stamps)they were never sold as "stamps". It was clear, and all of us knew it,that they were just cinderellas. Although, many people bought them for Catalan patriotisme. But, never were pretended to be used as postage stamps. Personally I rejected them, until I become interested on cinderellas, and now I've most of the mini-sheets.
Another thing, is what some internet salespeople write on their description.
7.- They can be found on my late friend Sebastiŕ Sabaté catalog of Catalan tňpic stamps and cinderellas.
8.- We always collect them as whole mini-sheets, never as single "stamp".In Barcelona, you can find them for 1 or 2 €.
9.- They can also be found unperforated or with the red overprint "Mostra" ("sample"). These, comand a Premium, as they're less common.
10.- The Money was for the Gild's Philatelic Activity. This was also clear. They were never sold as charity stamps. We Catalans, like to be very clear on these qüestions.
11.- "Face value" was in pesseta, our currency up to January 2002. The 50 pta of the "stamp" was equivalent at today's 0.30 €. By then, they weren't cheap at all.

Nicolae Grigorescu (1838–1907) was one of the founders of modern Romanian painting. He spent some years in France and was influenced by other painters there. The Lady at the Beach was featured twice on Romanian stamps. This one 2003.

Hello Cursus, Thanks for all that information!! The Lady with the Umbrella is really an important figure in Barcelona. K.

The second time the Lady at the Beach appeared on a Romanian stamp was to honor Nicolae Grigorescu 100 years after his death. Many of his paintings have been shown on Romanian stamps.

Cayman has beautiful beaches for enjoying a get together and some sections are still protected for sea turtles.
