Thematic : Umbrellas On Stamps.

Is this the historical background of calling the passenger car of a train "coach", the train part of it was a carriage truck! The horse seems to be quite relaxed; perhaps used to traveling at about 35 mph. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway was the world's first intercity passenger railway in which all the trains were timetabled and operated for most of the distance solely by steam locomotives. Part of a setenant set of 5 stamps commemorating 150 years.

Liberia issued a set of stamps, 1973, commemorating the early days of large steam locomotives. This one a type constructed in the United states and working during the turn of the past century.

Finland issued a set of four seasons stamps in 2013. This one shows a youngster struggling with a large umbrella on a windy, wet fall day. Beautiful colors.

Again an umbrella as a symbol of protection. This one issued by Turkey for the "Think Green" year is particularly well done because the umbrella is made of leaves!

The Bo Sang Umbrella Festival of Thailand is extravagantly colorful - each umbrella is beautifully painted. It takes place each year in January. One in a set of four stamps featuring folk festivals, 2013.

I had never heard of an umbrella topical collection. Fun idea!!

Kim Il Sung (1912–1994) was the leader of North Korea from its establishment in 1948 until his death in 1994. He held the posts of Premier and President. Kim's birthday, "Day of the Sun", is celebrated every year as a public holiday in North Korea, 15th of April. Here he is shown out for a walk in April weather.

The Tang Monk Xuanzang of China traveled extensively during the 7th century to study Buddism. Xuanzang is remembered as a great scholar for his translations from Sanskrit to Chinese but also for his descriptions of the places he visited, mostly on foot. Attaching his umbrella to his backpack was very convenient. A modern-day monk in the footsteps of Xuanzang.

I cannot recall the Egyptians with Umbrellas or similar...strange.

Hi Rod, Glad you're having fun with the umbrellas. You are probably right about the ancient Egyptians not having umbrellas, but they did have sunshades/fans. These were of varying size and were carried by special fan bearers. They could provide shade as well as a bit of a breeze; feathers were most likely used for the fancy ones, palm fronds for commoners. The murals show them occasionally and the fan holders have been found, for example the one in Tut's Tomb, all in gold and gems. Nowadays you can get good imitations, or make your own.
