Antigua and Barbuda honored the French artist Raul Dufy (1877-1953) who painted the tourist crowd at the Pier in Trouville, France, just across the Seine from Le Havre, where the artist grew up. The pier may still be there, but the crowds look different. I tried to count all the parasols and got to about 16. Stamp of 2003.

Many thousands of Ethiopian Jews have left their country for Israel during the past decades, the Aliyah. This migration was often very difficult but Israeli airplanes also brought many of them directly. The umbrellas carried by important personalities are not only sunshades, they signify status. Does anyone know which building is in the upper left and which fortress is pictured next to the empty Ethiopian village in the tab?

The Israel National Trail, (Shvil Yisra'el) is a hiking path that was inaugurated in 1995. The trail crosses the entire country of Israel from the Lebanese border to Eilat on the Red Sea, a length of about one thousand km (631 mi). The trail does not lead through Palestinian territories; does anyone see a border to these territories on the map? Floating in the Dead Sea must be a very special experience.

A warmly clad Eskimo and a penguin are enjoying a day at the beach. Montenegro voted to become independent in 2006, so this stamp is one of the last to be issued by the combination state Serbia-Montenegro. The child's drawing was for the topic of integration - how better than to bring together representatives of the two poles!

Kris, the story of the Ethiopian Jews' exodus to Israel is a fascinating one. It involves a fake scuba diving resort set up in Sudan.


Singapore's 1997 Greetings booklet contained 20 stamps (2 each of 10 different designs) based on friendship. This stamp depicts friends sharing an umbrella.

The Tottori Sand Dunes next to the city of Tottori, Japan, is a unique area resembling a desert. It's popular for just strolling about, for even camel riding or for its sand museum. The stamp shows an umbrella dance, perhaps an old tradition. 1961

The Shan-Shan Festival of Tottori has become one that anyone can join. The name 'shan-shan' is based on onomatopoeia for both the sound of a bell ringing and the sound of water boiling (reminiscent of Tottori's many hot springs). Each umbrella has small bells attached to it. Every year the area is bustling with over 4,000 people taking part in the umbrella dance. (see Japan tourist information) 1996

A stamp featuring a traditional dance celebrated in the mountainous provinces of Viet-Nam, Dan-Toc-Mong. An instrument like a xylophone provides rhythm. Stamp unperforated, 1972, set of 8.

The Quan Ho style of singing is a tradition in the Bac Ninh province of Viet Nam. Since 2009 it is on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritages (note logo). The songs are often sung from a beautiful dragon boat to the audience along the shores. Stamp of 2011.

The Royal Couple visited Tuvalu in 1982, at that time on the Britannica. Queen Elisabeth carried her own parasol and took in all the sights. Stamp set issued for the 40th anniversary of her coronation.

Gibralter's stamp for Europa 2004 showed one of the many street cafes and eateries with seating under umbrellas that you could visit on your vacation.
