The only bits of "beaches" Switzerland has are at some of the larger lakes, such as Lake Luzerne or Vierwaldstättersee. With an added pool, such beaches are very popular among sun- and water-bathers. But it is more quiet on a mountain meadow. Europa stamp of 2004.

During the period of time between two Popes, the Vatican issues stamps bearing the term "sede vacante", the empty seat. In the Papal coat of arms an umbraculum replaces the triregnum tiara. The gold and the silver keys remain. The umbraculum or ombrellino represents the temporary governance (protection?) of the Holy Roman Church by the Camerlengo. 1963

In 1978 the "sede vacante" stamps had a design resembling stained glass windows.

In 2005 the "sede vacante" emblem was carried by a small angel and the ombrellino had frills. (Note change from Lira to €)

The angel was much larger for the "sede vacante" stamps of 2013.

Bathing at the seaside began to become popular among the well-off during the Victorian era, but it must have been rather cumbersome to change from the voluminous clothing of the times to a bathing suit. Changing cabins pulled into the water by horses provided privacy. I found the scan of an old postcard. Stamp: 1987, bathing at Douglas Sands, part of a set of 6 featuring Douglas.

Malta has a few lovely beaches, but most of the coast is very rocky. This one may be close to Valetta. For Commonwealth Day, 1983.

Monacco doesn't have much room for beaches, so this one is most likely the one at Larvotto from where one can see the city of Monte Carlo, 1966.

A farmers' market up in the hills of Viet Nam. Rice, fruits, vegetables and animals are bought, sold or traded (and right in the middle there is a musician). Set of three stamps depicting traditional markets; the other two show a valley market and a boat market.

J.P. Lorand, known for his cheerful, colorful 'naive' style, painted a horse-dancer for the Belgian stamp of 2009. And just for the fun of it, another painting of his 'At the flower market'.

It probably takes quite a bit of skill and practice to balance an umbrella this way. Stamp of 1974 about children's circus training. I remember seeing a performance of the Chinese state circus and was simply stunned. Unfortunately the photo is not mine.

The topic chosen for the Europa stamps in 2002 was the circus. Cyprus issued a booklet featuring two scenes, one of them a tight-rope clown with a miniature umbrella. And he/she appears to be juggling something at the same time!

Croatia's Europa circus stamps for 2002 showed a clown with an umbrella in a color-light performance. Perhaps umbrellas are so popular as props because they are light in weight and eye-catching.

The Netherlands celebrated 100 years of the Herman Renz Circus with a colorful commemorative sheet featuring 10 different scenes from the show. The high-wire artist seems to have just let his umbrella and top-hat go.
