An agency for Burundi issued a sheet of four stamps featuring paintings by Henri de Toulouse-Lutrec (1864-1901) in 2013. One of them shows a detail of the "Lady with an Umbrella". The whole painting shows why it has that name; it can be seen in the L'oeuvre Museum.

Beautiful works of art often decorate Japanese stamps for the International Letter-Writing Week. In 2012 "The Snowstorm" by Ito Shinsui (Hajime) was chosen - and just because they are so lovely, another one I found.

Large ceremonial umbrellas at the Temple during celebrations in the Laotian world heritage city of LuangPrabang are colorful and appear tiered, and at the market one can purchase beautiful smaller ones for everyday use. 2010.

Hi Rod, Interesting to see the ceremonial barges, very similar to those on page 2. It must be wonderful to see one of them glide by. K.

The royal processional barges of Asia are sometimes very large and magnificently decorated. The one pictured on the stamp is a small model, made of carved ivory and it carries an umbrella; 1985. I wonder how long it takes to make something like this.

Kris,
Thailand can be an enigma, sometimes utterly frustrating, other times, it grabs you by the heart and turns you inside out.

The Chao Phraya river, has to be felt, to be understood, and to see the barges and the oarsmen, utterly mesmerising.
I used to take the river taxis daily, yet rose coloured glasses, dims the reality, as a white skinned Englishman, in dripping wet shirt from the humidity, one looks like a dog's breakfast within minutes of leaving home, I don't miss that.

In ancient VietNam even the royal mount was accompanied by an umbrella carrier. Stamp of 1999, one in the set of four on the 2nd Le Dynasty. That looks like a snake hanging in the saddle strap.

Hi Rod, Interesting to hear about your Thai experiences. K.

The Royal Academy of Arts celebrated its 250th birthday last year with a set of stamps designed by contemporary artists. One of them is by Yinka Shonibare who drew a crowd of visitors in the rain, waiting to see an exhibit in the academy.
