The Maldives (or an agency for the country) issued a souvenir sheet of four stamps honoring the painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894). The well-known scene of Parisians in the rain is in the frame of the sheet; the original is at the Art Institute of Chicago. Amazing how the artist made the cobblestones look wet.

Hi Rod, Thanks for the story of Winnie, is there any connection to AA Milne? K.

Kris,
wiki........

Milne is most famous for his two Pooh books about a boy named Christopher Robin after his son, Christopher Robin Milne, and various characters inspired by his son's stuffed animals, most notably the bear named Winnie-the-Pooh. Christopher Robin Milne's stuffed bear, originally named "Edward," was renamed "Winnie" after a Canadian black bear named Winnie (after Winnipeg), which was used as a military mascot in World War I, and left to London Zoo during the war. "The pooh" comes from a swan the young Milne named "Pooh." E. H. Shepard illustrated the original Pooh books, using his own son's teddy, Growler ("a magnificent bear"), as the model. The rest of Christopher Robin Milne's toys, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and Tigger, were incorporated into A. A. Milne's stories, and two more characters #8211; Rabbit and Owl #8211; were created by Milne's imagination. Christopher Robin Milne's own toys are now on display in New York where 750,000 people visit them every year.

Last year I read the book "Who killed Christopher Robin"
Rolling Stones member Brian Jones, sadly died at Cotchford Farm, the previous home of A A Milne.
Another creative genius.

Portugal celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Museum Abade de Bacal with a stamp showing a few of its cultural treasures. One of them is the beautiful painting by the artist Jose Salgado (1864-1945).

Hi Rod, Thanks for more info on Winnie; I did have some of it at the top of page 9, but I didn't know about the Canadian and military background. And yes, the Nordkurier is a postal service located in north-eastern Germany and they print their own stamps, some with nice motifs. Grossbrief is not a package, but a larger and heavier letter than normal (cute stamp). K.

The legend of the Tree in the Wind is part of the culture of Dahomey/Benin. I don't know how the story goes and what roles the young woman and the chameleon play, but it probably goes back a long way. She is accompanied by an umbrella-bearer, so she must be a person of rank. "Be courteous and wise rather than use force and violence." Dahomey (1974) and an overprint for Benin (2008).

The National Museum of Sweden opened in 1866; the stamp commemorating the event 100 years later shows folks in the style of those times. Stamp also honoring architectural treasures of Sweden (byggnadsminnen). Only the marvelous skill of Slania could have captured all that detail.

This souvenir sheet is quite unusual because it shows both elephant species: the African and the Asian. The African elephant is rarely tamed for work or parades, whereas the Asian species has been for many centuries and is here accompanied by several umbrella bearers. Part of a set showing elephants over the centuries 1992.

The elephant is carrying two people of rank to the philatelic meeting in India, Indipex 1973. The elephant has almost complete body paint and the riders have special mounted umbrellas. The green inset shows the Lion Capital of Ashoka - it was one of the first Indian stamps issued after independence in 1947.

The J. B. Fensterer Company of Munich made umbrellas for royalty: "Königlich & Kaiserliche Hofschirmfabrik", but the children depicted on the cinderellas represent the general population.

Commercial television began transmitting in Great Britain in 1955. A set of six stamps commemorates 50 years of programs/shows produced by commercial television. One of them features "The Avengers" and the props used by the character John Steed; he even had a weapon in that brolly!

(Hi Alexey, At the bottom of page 22 you can find out more about the Bethel Institute. Greetings, K.)
