Marie Bracquemond (1841–1916) was a French impressionist who painted in such marvelous detail and color that even a photograph can't compete. Her painting of a lady with a pink parasol was featured in a commemorative sheet of stamps issued by the Union of the Comores (or an agency for that country) in 2016

A truly royal umbrella, so big that it needs four bearers, shades the scantily clothed blond Emperor. He marches along in the frame of a souvenir sheet featuring classical fairy tales. The Emperor represents the human quality 'Vanity - not to be blinded'. Macau, 2018

The Danish-American Women's Association collected money for financing the statue of H. C. Andersen in Central Park by issuing a whole pane of pretty cinderellas illustrating many of Andersen's tales, 1955. One of these Statue-Fund cinderellas shows the Sandman with his umbrella looking into a lit room to see if the children are ready for sleep. Cover of a German book showing the Sandman with his umbrella.

Another cinderella shows the Chinese emperor, accompanied by an umbrella bearer, who loved the nightingale, perhaps in the small bird cage. The statue of Andersen in Central Park is surrounded by space for anyone who would like to sit and listen to the regular readings of the master's tales. Someone has left him a small panda gift to keep him and the 'ugly' duckling company.

The communities of tiny Liechtenstein each have their colorful traditional costumes. An umbrella is an accessory for the one pictured on the stamp, 1979 - one in a set of three. Photo of an intricately made bonnet - the Duke's castle in the background.

One stamp in the large definitive series of Austria, 1930s, showing a lady in a traditional costume and carrying an umbrella. And the castle of Salzburg in the background. (See also page 19 for the later definitive series of traditional costumes.)

A few more cinderellas advertising for an umbrella company, Wurtmann in Cologne. In the first picture a young couple is protected from prying eyes by a lovely umbrella. In the second picture even a large dog could find protection under that umbrella and in the third picture three trolls huddle under an umbrella which is a perfect trump card for a clandestine evening out at the campfire. 1900-1920

Paintings by the artist Shinsui Ito (1898-1972) have been shown on several Japanese stamps. The "Snowstorm" was issued in 1983. And just for good measure on International Women's Day today, another lady venturing out on elevated shoes in a snowstorm.

Winnie the Pooh has visited the thread earlier. These PriorPost stamps of Belgium show him and his friends playing with a big blue umbrella in the garden.

Winnie and his friends having some more fun with their umbrella in the flower garden; same set of stamps as above. Pooh and his friends are just as popular now as they were when A A Milne created them almost a hundred years ago.

Last year Winnie was featured in a whole set of Japanese self-adhesives. In this motive he is taking Piglet for a ride in his umbrella and the ducklings are trying to keep them upright.

Tiger seems to do better at helping Pooh rescue Piglet in this Disney drawing of adventures with an umbrella. 1998 Antigua & Barbuda; a whole pane of drawings.
