Quote: Somehow the artwork by Peter Max doesn't seem to have much relevance to these serious topics. I tend to agree Kris. I try to avoid negativity, but today's news is hard to avoid, The White Rhino about to become extinct, A soup of plastic in the Ocean as big as Queensland (Possibly from the Tsunami in Japan) etc etc. My refusing plastic bags at the supermarket, seems rather wimpish. |

Easter vacation is soon coming up; for many Europeans time to get some sun after a long winter. France 2007. (Hi Rod, Yes, we have seen that on the news here as well, so sad! Most shops here no longer provide plastic bags. K.) |

Japan issued a beautiful set of 'Umbrella Ladies" in 2013. This painting by Tori Kiyonaga (1752-1815) shows three Geisha of the Tachibana Street. (See also another Tori Kiyonaga on page one.) |

Uemura Shoen (1875–1949) began drawing and painting in her mother's tea parlor. Shoen is known primarily for her paintings of beautiful women in their fine clothing. The painting of women hurrying through the light snow was chosen for the international letter writing week of 2010. |

Japan selected one of Uemura Shoens's paintigs for their joint issue with Austria in 2009. Hi Rod, I found out that the gentleman of Cochin is the Maharaja Sri Rama Varma (1861-1941) who was head of that province from 1933 to 1941. But I couldn't find out if the umbrella had any symbolic meaning. K. |

Kris, the significance of the icons (including the umbrella) depicted in Kochchi stamps has already been described here before. https://goscf.com/t/54033#471388The information can be found in the following reference. Ref. Stamps of Cochin. SP Luiz. private, Ernakulam 1972 Chapter VIII: Anchal Stamps; p.27 |

The Gulf Cooperation Council, GCC, Consumer Protection Day aims at keeping prices and quality of consumer goods under control; 2007. The umbrella as a symbolic feature for protection is obvious here as in a few earlier posts. Thanks for the added info! Great fun to get answers from all over the world. K. |
