Catalog Numbers For The Los Angeles Liquor License Tax Stamps Of 1933?

I am researching the Los Angeles Liquor License Tax stamps, circa 1933 and have been unable to find a catalog listing anywhere for these stamps. These were issued in denominations of 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, 16, and 31 cents by the City of Los Angeles. They are not in my SRS catalog, and of course, not in Scotts.

Does anyone know if these are listed anywhere by catalog number? They are somewhat scarce, having been in use for less than four months in 1933--prior to the repeal of prohibition.

I appreciate any information the members of this community can provide regarding these stamps.

Here's a picture of the most common, the red 3-cent stamp. (Each denomination is a different color, but similar in appearance aside from the denomination.) All stamps in my set are similar in condition to the stamp shown.

This is a delightful set of stamps. To the best of my knowledge these were first listed by George Cabot in his 1940 Priced Catalogue of the State and City Revenue and Tax Stamps of the United States. The 3¢ was for a case of beer; the 4¢ for an eighth barrel, the only two denominations that were priced in used condition by Cabot. I have examples of each in used condition. The 6¢ was for the sixth barrel; the 8¢ was for a quarter barrel; the 11¢ was for a third barrel ( a size that to the best of my knowledge was only marketed in California); the 16¢ was for a half barrel, the third denomination that I have in used condition; and the 31¢ was for a barrel. Those who are mathematically inclined will notice that the denominations do not follow a strictly arithmetic division of the 31¢ per barrel rate.

My personal interest in revenue stamps is always with used examples. In the case of the Los Angeles beer stamps the interest is to try to document the earliest and latest uses.

I went to my California collection and discovered that I have a defective copy of the 6¢ for the sixth barrel used December 18. The federal sixth barrel stamps are relatively scarce and this Los Angeles stamp must have been used in combination with a federal beer, so the used Los Angeles should be quite scarce. Surprisingly I have yet to find a used quarter barrel Los Angeles. Perhaps the quarter barrel was not a popular size there (in contrast to my home state of Pennsylvania, where the quarter barrel was a very popular size).

The earliest use of the Los Angeles stamps that I have seen is October 9, just over five weeks after the initiation of these stamps on September 1, 1933. Does anyone know the expiration date of these stamps. I have a stamp cancelled December 20. Perhaps December 31, 1933?

I found a October 2, 1933 canx from ABC Distributing Co. Inc. on the 3 cent.

A very sad 16 cent 1/2 bbl stamp with a V B Co 10-19-33 perfin.

According to the Perfin Catalog, this perfin belongs to the Virginia Brewing Co. of Roanoke, VA (EV0130). Doesn't make much sense to me, and I submit it is probably is from the Vernon Brewing Co. of Los Angeles. I will send these scans to Art Mongan (Chairman of the perfin catalog project) for his review.

Kent, I can add December 20, 1933 on the 3 cent denomination. A.B.C. Distributing Company.

Your January 4, 1934 on the 4¢ eighth barrel seems significant. I previously had a start date of September 1, 1933 on the Los Angeles beer stamps. This thread was begun with the statement that it lasted four months. That would take us to December 31. I would have expected that this city tax would have been superseded as soon as the state tax on beer kicked in. I do not know when that state tax was effective. California did not use state beer stamps. But a reasonable date is January 1, 1934. So why should a January 4, 1934 date exist on a stamp?

Further thoughts. I do not know exactly when the various city beer tax stamps in Washington state became obsolete in 1934. But it appears that they were used jointly with the Washington state beer stamps in 1933. Given the Washington state example, it is plausible that the California state beer tax could have overlapped with the Los Angeles stamps. But in the California case there cannot be joint use of state and city stamps.

Just reread the note that started this thread. One correction. December 5, 1933 is the end of National Prohibition. These Los Angeles stamps are certainly in use after the end of National Prohibition.
Was there also a California state prohibition law that had to be rescinded?
