image of reverse is upside down, so what appears to be a paper repair on the lower left (3rd perforation + is added) can be seen on the upper left on the bottom pic. There appears to be a sealed tear on the upper right side, just in front of "1892". Very nice centering on this stamp.

So I sold the $5 on ebay for $400, less seller fees. Was this a fair price? with a catalogue value above $2000 and the columbians being so highly collectible I could use some reassurance that I did ok. I think so given the apparent regumming and the lack of bottom margin, but still like to hear your opinions on that sale price.

The correct 2018 Scott catalog value in sound condition unused without gum or used is $1,150. Because the stamp is highly sought after, unsound examples sell at a relatively high percentage of catalog value. Ordinary damaged or reperforated stamps sometimes achieve 10 to 20 percent of catalog value on ebay, but the percentage has dropped over the years because so many are available. If the stamp was properly described and has no appearance defects when viewed in person, about $400 is possibly a fair retail price. Please keep in mind that many ebay buyers assume that all stamps are faulty unless the seller has a good reputation or can prove otherwise.

I have always been perplexed regarding the number of "used" 3$-5$ Columbians on the market. I understand the unused stamps (saved by collectors as investments in the hobby) but every time I see a used 3-5$ value single (equivalent to sticking a 140$ stamp on an envelope or package today) I am mesmerized. I own a used 5$, and I am just astonished that someone soaked or lifted the puppy off a package/envelope that was sent with 140$ postage.

Isn't it the case that, as a purely philatelic creation, the higher value Columbian stamps stuck around for decades before people decided that they were desirable? So their use on parcels etc by dealers twenty years later wouldn't have been quite so unusual.
