AnthonyUK - Superb contributions. I especially like the image of your engraved South Vietnam Phoenix airmail stamp, issued on September 7, 1955, Scott No. C10. - nethryk

Although I don't generally collect United Nations stamps, I did happen to see that this UN issue is scheduled for release today (09/07/2011) on Endangered Bird Species:

Here are images of the four stamps in a set issued by France on November 12, 1960 to publicize the study of bird migration and the protection of wildlife. These stamps were designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, save the first one, which was engraved by Charles Mazelin, Scott Nos. 978-981, Y&T Nos. 1273-76.

Today, I am going to my neighbours, and take a picture
of a "Willie Wagtail"

He/she has nested on top of the bakelite connection
in a string of party lights, under the verandah.

The birds have used white fur from the clippings of a Poodle
and the nest looks like an Ice cream cone.

The house has 4 dogs and a cat!
These tiny fellows are brave and aggressive

All construction of Mum's sewing room has halted, until
the eggs have hatched and the little fellows fledged.

The Willie Wagtail is insectivorous and spends much time chasing prey in open habitat. Its common name is derived from its habit of wagging its tail horizontally when foraging on the ground. Aggressive and territorial, the Willie Wagtail will often harass much larger birds such as the Laughing Kookaburra and Wedge-tailed Eagle. It has responded well to human alteration of the landscape and is a common sight in urban lawns, parks, and gardens. It was widely featured in aboriginal folklore around the country as either a bringer of bad news or a stealer of secrets.

I am not aware of a willy wagtail on a stamp

That's a great story and pic Rod. Thanks for posting it.

Here's someone's chance to use your picture, with permission of course, to make a personal stamp, with the name of the bird, Latin and common, and sex also perhaps, like on the Spanish personal stamps in the personalized thread.

Sometimes the skills of the birder do not run to taking a good photograph or in having a non-obsuring background. Or is always possible either.

Oh heck, here is a Spanish one and a Canada one (with no names ).

Thanks Puzz...

the Spanish is a Linnet

The Linnet (Carduelis cannabina) is a small passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae.

The Linnet derives its scientific name from its fondness for hemp and its English name from its liking for seeds of flax, from which linen is made.

Thank you for the ID.

Could I post the other Canada personal stamps I have pictures of for identification sometime? Please? I don't know birds, or enough of them it seems.

Here's a nice mythical looking crane from Armenia.
Part of my "Oh let's just keep it 'cause it's neat" collection.
