Sc#3922 2013 60c 40 Spotted Pardalote. Pardalotus Quadragintus. One of Australia's rarest birds. ...and such a beautiful fellow. The birds deliberately clip the leaf stalks of the manna-gum tree, a species of eucalyptus, with their bills. In many cases the tree responds to the wounds by exuding sticky and nutritious manna gum over the next few days, which the birds harvest. Biologists call this foraging behaviour "mining" or "farming". "Mining for tree exudates is an unusual foraging behaviour among birds," says Case. "This is the first record of an Australian bird that mines trees." |

I have an album containing all fifty of the state birds on Fleetwood cachetes cacheted covers. Does anyone have interest in seeing them? I have always thought of these as fairly common. |

On February 3, 2007 Latvia issued this 5 santims stamp as a part of its Municipal Coats of Arms series. Arms are those of the village of Staicele (pop. 854) in the north central part of the country, near the border with Estonia. From staicelesnovads.lv/2007, "Staicele is the farthest northern place where these magnificent birds (white stork/ Ciconia Ciconia) nest in colonies. In Staicele town emblem a white stork is outlined against the background of a dark blue sky." From wikipedia, "The area of Staicele has been inhabited only since the 19th century when a tavern and a ferryman's house on the banks of the Salaca River are mentioned." |

Here ia a 13 santims value Sc #369) from Latvia's Municipal Coats of Arms series. This version of the design was issued on April 12, 1996. The stamp depicts the arms of Preili (pop. 8600) in the southeast of the country. A large raven (Corvus corax) is shown on a gold background. Recently (2012), the arms have been amended to include a four-leaf clover behind the raven's head and upper body. From heraldry-wiki.com, "The arms were granted in 1938: a raven. The raven is a symbol of wisdom in Latvian folklore." As the photo of a raven shows, "artistic license" was taken with the raven's morphology. Its distinctive beak was changed to that of a raptor. |
