I have what appears to be a Cinderella item, but I may be wrong. The stamp appears to be Austrian in origin, but in Yiddish it says "Jewish Post Bus." Has somebody seen a stamp like this before? Thank You

I have seen them before, can't recall when or where. This may have been used in Krackow or Silesia Regions of Austrian Postal areas within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Thank you for the response everyone. I have seen some similar stamps with a"Poczta Polska" on them but I am not sure if they are related.
Thank you for your help. I am glad that I found this forum. |

Poczta Polska are the locals of post WW1 Poland for use in Polish areas that were formally under Austro-Hungarian control. This is a local but for a smaller group of Yiddish Jews. I've been poking around have not found anything definitive yet.

I have been doing some research on this stamp, and using the information that warrehouse provided. I believe you are correct that this stamp may have been used in Krakow and other regions of Austria-Hungarian Empire. I think that that this stamp may have been used in Galicia, which encompassed southern Poland and Northern A-H from 1916-1918. That is all that I could find out.
Does anybody know what the next step that can be taken in order to verify any of this information?
Thanks |

I'm surprised at the lack on information on this stamp. I will surmise that this is a post WW1 private post used provisionally by using acquired stamps from the now defunct Austro-Hungarian Empire and overprint them in Yiddish, principally, but not likely exclusively, for the local Jewish population corresponce.

Do you think that it might be worth it to get it certified in order to make sure that the writing on it is authentic with the period of the stamp?
I will try to find some professional stamp experts in Poland/Slovakia to see if they recognize or can tell me something else that I don't know. I will post here if I get any responses. |

awmartin, I hope you don't mind. But I sent an image of your stamp to the "Austria Philatelic Society". I think that's one place to identify the stamp. Who knows maybe it will turn out to be unique!

Update: I have emailed 10+ stamp experts, focusing mostly on ones who specialize in Jewish stamps. I have received three responses, and none of them could tell me any more than I told them. They want me to email them back when I find anything else. |

Of course they do. I find this a very interesting item. I've not yet received a response from the Austrian Society so far.

Hi awmartin, Nice stamp ! I have sent a scan to a Cinderella stamp group. I have never seen one before. Does the stamp have gum? It looks like an excellent copy. It may be a private post stamp of a local Bus company for carrying mail. They have overprinted excess stocks of a 1918 Austrian stamp for this purpose . Doubtless they didn't need to get permission in those days !! The blue ink marks? Could they be a cancellation if the stamp doesn't have gum ? Or even if it does? Polish issues of 1919 were of Austrian stamps overprinted 'Poczta Polska', and that overprint on this Austrian stamp [SG#261] was SG#44, Red on yellow.{not sure of Scott No offhand]. So let's hope Mike's enquiries prove fruitful. Interesting item. Londonbus1...Of course it could be a fantasy or fake overprint ! |
