Sculptor Fritz Cremer's bronze figure in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg park of Berlin was erected in honor of the International Brigades who helped resist Franco's forces during the Spanish Civil War. It is larger-than-life with a sword of almost two meters length. Stamp of 1986.

In Old Norse texts, Odin is depicted as wielding a spear named Gungnir. He is accompanied by his companions the wolves and the ravens, who bring him information from all over Midgard and he rides the flying, eight-legged steed Sleipnir across the sky and into the underworld. Odin depicted on the Stone of Ardre, Gotland. Stamp of 1981.

Island issued a pretty, small sheet of Odin with his pike and Slepnir in 2004. His wolf was not with him then, but the ravens were.

Even Botswana showed Odin and Sleipnir on a stamp in 1973! I don't know where he left his weapons that time, but the green Midgard snake was with him.

The Spanish hero of the 11th century, El Cid (Rodrigo Diaz), is well known not only in Spain. The painting by Marcellino Santamaria Sedano (1866-1952) was featured on definitive stamps over a span of several years (1936+). The castle could be one in the vicinity of Burgos.

El Cid was reduced to a comic figure in the stamp of 2000, a far cry from the heroic figure in the square of Burgos created by the sculptor Juan Cristobal Gonzalez Quesada in 1955.

Another statue of El Cid was created by Anna H. Huntington (1876-1972) and is shown in the stamp of 1962. There are many copies of this statue, but the original is at the Hispanic Society in New York City.

The paint of Viktor Vasnetsov "Three heroes". Although the characters of the picture came from folk tales, all three are real people. In the center is Ilya Muromets - the holy Russian Orthodox Church, his remains are kept in the Kyiv-Pechora Lavra, to his left Dobrynya Nikitich, the real military commander of Prince Vladimir the Saint, on the right Alexei Popovich, Rostov boyar (knight) Prince Vsevolod

Robert the Bruce, also called Robert I, (1274—1329), was king of Scotland (1306–29). He freed Scotland from English rule, winning the decisive Battle of Bannockburn and ultimately confirming Scottish independence in the Treaty of Northampton. Note the fierce red Scottish lion on yellow. An image of The Bruce with a sword. One of four stamps featuring Scottish/English heroes, 1974.

Hi Alexey, Those "Three Heroes" are very impressive! K.

The second part of Paolo Uccello's large painting of the Battle of San Remo. The knights must have fought primarily with lances - there are plenty of them already broken. FDC, note the coat of arms of San Marino.

Kulikovo battle is one of the most significant in Russian history. For the first time Russian troops were able to repulse a huge army of Tatars and their subordinate peoples.

in September 1380 the troops of the Moscow prince Dmitri
crossed the Don and on the outskirts of the modern Tula region met the army of Mamay

Before the battle, Sergius of Radonezh blessed Prince Dmitry and sent to him two experienced warriors: Peresvet and Oslabya

By tradition, before the battle was duel of the two best warriors. A mighty warrior Chelubey with a long spear ride out from the Tatar regiment, and from the Russian came the warrior of Sergius - Peresvet

according to legend, both warriors pierced each other with spears, but the Chelubey fell dead, and Peresvet raced to the Russian regiments.

There is a version that Peresvet took off his armor, that would give Chelubey pierce himself, but reach him with his spear

In the battle, the Tatars first began to win, but the experienced governor Bobrok-Volynsky

imgaccurately chose the moment to enter the reserve regiment and the Russians won a complete victory

After the battle on the retreating convoys with the wounded attacked the ally Mamai, the Lithuanian prince Jagiello. He either did not have time, or was afraid to join the battle.

Now there is a monastery on the Kulikovo field, one of the towers resembles an ancient helmet.

Sergius of Radonezh became a Russian saint

and founded the famous Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra

and the Moscow prince Dmitry received the honorary nickname Donskoy

and from Mamay remained only the name of the mound on the bank of the Volga. Now were is a monument to another great battle

The names of Peresvet and Oslabya were worn by many warships

Another Viking from the Isle of Man, 1978. Note the pattern in his shield.

Hello, Alexey, You have enough pictures of Russian battles to write a book! K.
