I'm trying to identify what I believe to be a Chinese stamp. I've scoured the web and can't seem to find a match. Can anyone assist?

Freddie, This stamp is, as mentioned by perf12, from Japan and could be read as;

[EDITED and corrected by Hironobu]

- Top (from left to right from RIGHT to LEFT): "Kiryu Silk Fabric Export"
- Bottom (from left to right from RIGHT to LEFT): "Industrial Association"
- Centre: "Certificate Label (Seal)"

Kiryu is a city located at Gun-ma prefecture, and is famous of silk textile manufacturing; more information on the city's web page:

http://www.city.kiryu.lg.jp/english/1005269.html

I would call this one as a certificate seal/label than a "revenue" as this should have been aimed to serve as a certificate of authenticity of the product.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Hironobu, for your capable assistance and instruction, as always!

I realize that I don't know an approximate date for this stamp shown above (and can't put my hands on my Shimomura at the moment), but, just judging from the style, it looks to me to be pre-WW2.

However, if it were pre-WW2, it would be more customary for the writing to go from right to left, correct?

So, does that mean that it's post-WW2, or do you know if there's another explanation for the direction of the writing?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this!

Dave and all;

I've spotted a simple yet essential mistake in my former reply; the writing direction is indeed from RIGHT to LEFT, and apologies to Dave for causing confusion. The original post has been corrected to avoid any further confusion...

I have checked my Shimomura catalogue for any further information on this label without success. Also very little information on the Web about the Kiryu Export Silk Fabric Industrial Association, with only traces of evidence that this association did exist at least at Showa 9; there is a record that the director of the association donated some fabric products to the Showa emperor.

I also have found that the Articles of Association (AoA) of this association is preserved in an AoA archive at Nagoya University (see link below), but the date of issue is noted as "unknown". However, judging from the other AoA documents in that archive, it is very likely that this association did exist in the early Showa period.

It is quite amazing to see that there's so little information on these pretty labels, even with quite evident origin of their issue ! (and this is where there's still plenty of fun)

Sorry again for the mess.

P.S. Some addition to the history of Association; just found this article stating the establishment of the association to be 1932 (=Showa 7). Listed in Table 3, third entry.
