I would think it's a #78, lilac or even dark lilac. There is a light brown line under the T of TWENTY that could be a lightened pen cancel, and the top and right side perforations look squirrely to me - not round enough. |

I collect 24c 1861s and I wouldn't hazard a guess at shade without seeing it. It's almost certainly a Gray or thereabouts.. it's some shade of a 78 in almost all certainty. Impression is not that of an early shade.
I agree with Tipzi, perfs have been monkeyed with at top and right. |

Hey BillW....Mr. Tipzi knows this issue pretty well, too....took him a couple years, but he did get his 78c certed a couple years back by PF...
Tipzi, are you going to the Nashville show this weekend?

Ray,
I don't doubt it. I'm well aware of how tough that is... I got one carted recently and have another that needs reconsideration.
What I meant was that with computers you can't tell shades. I took a cover that I have online and pulled it up on my laptop, desktop and iPad and the shade was markedly different on all 3 devices. |

So what do you suggest I do, since we know they have been purchased already? |
