I was checking a bunch of India stamps for inverted watermarks and came across the 1934 9 pies typo that had an inverted watermark. Stanley Gibbons did not have it listed. It is definitely the typo version with short face lines and 5 nose lines (see scan). Can anyone tell me if there is a listing elsewhere for this stamp.

Are you talking about this stamp? (1932 litho.)

No, it is the 1934 typo version and without the "service" overprint.

Strange. In my 2011 SG part 1 the 9p litho issued 22.4.32 is SG233. The 9p typo issued 27.8.34 is SG233b.

All other stamps of this 1932-36 issue have a watermark inverted listing, except for 233b.

In scott there is a note below the 1932 issue saying no 135 exists in both litho and typo.

The 2018 SG is the same.

For the litho, there is no real premium for the inverted watermark but the fact that there's no listing for the typo with inverted watermark would suggest that Vanchester either has a new discovery or SG have omitted the variety in error.

I'd be contacting SG and asking them if the omission is an oversight.

Yes my SG 2017 is exactly the same. No inverted watermark for the 233b typo yet all the other issues do have an inverted version. Before I go off and contact SG, I want to make sure that I have a typo version and not some poorly inked litho. Are there any other distinct differences between the typo and litho version other than the number of nose lines and the face lines as described by SG?

These are old scans, I sorted mine years ago. I am pretty sure these are the two different types.

The 1st is 233aw litho with watermark inverted, with 6 lines. I am by no means an expert on printing types, but the 2nd stamp looks to me to be a different type of printing. Compare mine to yours and see what you think. Your picture is not clear enough for me to decide.

and here is a close up of the face, there are 5 lines on the nose and the forehead lines are short and thin. It kind of looks to me that both of dynamode's are lithos

Your stamp does have the short lines on the forehead, so I think you may be correct on both counts. Looking again, both of mine do look like litho, and yours looks like typo. Hopefully someone that knows will jump in and put us straight.

I have sent an e-mail to Stanley Gibbons and should hear back within 3 working days. What has me to believe that this is an omission by Stanley Gibbons is that the catalogue number for the litho version of the inverted watermark is 233aw, suggesting that the typo version would be 233bw .

SG don't list all the watermark varieties for India simply because nobody has brought them to their attention, as I have found out recently in correspondence with them. However, if you raise the issue with proof and they agree then the stamp will probably be listed in the next catalogue edition. Good luck. It's things like this which keep a catalogue live.
