It is the modern stamps that drive most of the extra mount sizes. For British Commonwealth, you only need about 4 or 5 mount sizes. You buy them in strips to reduce price and allow for different width stamps.
Does this really apply to modern-ish mint stamps? I mean, if their market value is only a percentage of the actual face value, even in post office fresh condition, then hinging can do little harm to them. Especially since they can still be used to send a letter.
