Hello, my name is Ted. I live in Tyler, TX. and (like many folks) I recently
inherited a large stamp collection. I've actually had it for several years, but didn't realize it. My uncle, who passed away before I was born, collected stamps (back in the 1940s and 1950s). When he died, his father (my grandfather) picked up the hobby and added to the collection. I've had a large plastic bin in my closet for the past 15 years filled with some of his things. I opened it up about a month ago and found a very large stamp collection inside. Many are not organized (but some are). All in all, there are literally hundreds of thousands of stamps--mint plate blocks, sheets, and individuals. There are also covers, post cards, and envelopes with stamps from around the world. Most are new, but some or used and very old. For the past month, I've been trying to understand what I have by cataloging the stamps with the help of the US/BNA Stamp catalog I bought at Barnes and Nobles. It has been a slow, methodical (but enjoyable) process. I've only cataloged a small fraction of the stamps, and I am only now beginning to learn the vocabulary.
At first, I thought, "I need to go through this to see what it is worth." Now, I have become interested in the hobby. I'm glad I found this forum and am looking forward to learning more.
