I picked up a large amount of Scott 60 (ACSC 65), the 1/2p Emerald (Green). I've picked through them for the varieties, but now am interested in the Cancellations. I've found a few of the cities, but would like some help with the remainder.

In this first set, I've identified Swan Hill, Casterton, Picola West, Kongwak,Beeac, and Darlingford.

In the second set, we have Kyabram, Fitzroy, Thorpdale, Leongatha, Turiff, Ultima, and Geelong.

Can you help me identify the ones in the following pictures? (Some are only partials, as you can see.)

Most likely a Victorian type.

From the numeral spacing, it looks like a 3 digit type. Toongabbie, 545, 2nd type my best guess. Not rated for scarcity (i.e. common).

Definitely not NSW. With the exception of the late 830s, all NSW barred numerals should show side bars on either side of the numeral. Any numeral from 837 on can only be a barred numeral.

Thanks everyone. I'll file it away with this comment, as the best guess for now.

No probs. As for the numeral cancel, while Toongabbie isn't a bad guess, my money is on Natimuk - 945. It has an interesting story. The original cancel for Natimuk was 845. When they ordered a replacement around 1893 the number 945 was issued in error. It was sent out to them & they started using it. They were allowed to continue using it as Orville Post Office, the original 945, closed in 1894. It remained in use until 1917, which fits the stamp. The flat top of the 4 fits (most of the 500 series the 4 is pointed) & the angle of the 5. It's one of the more common numerals on Kangaroos & KGV heads (although usually 1d Red KGV). When I get time I'll post a scan.

It's also worth noting that scarcity ratings of Vic Numeral Cancellations don't apply to Roos & KGV - even when stated as commonly seen it's still rarer than on Victorian Stamps. When the Commonwealth stamps were issued, Post Offices were supposed to start using a Commonwealth cancellation, but some continued to use the Vic barred numeral for several years. An unrated numeral can still be rare when on a Roo or KGV head.
