I'm having a look at stamps I have on piece as I now have an idea of what varieties/flaws to look for (for a fair number of stamps anyway).
While doing so, I thought as a break - less brain power required, a sort of relief from this and other projects - I might find out what cities and towns I have postmarks for. So far it has been fun and I have also found a "money orders", a relief and an all initials postmark from W.A. (which I will need some help with also).

I have this one I'm stuck on. My computer recently died and I have had to purchase another one and, as such, lost all my saved websites. One website for postal codes of Australia which helped even if you have only a portion of the name (and lists both current and closed/renamed post offices).... I have searched for and can't find - I hope someone can help, can't understand why I'm not finding the website - from memory the site is a yellow and brown background.

Meanwhile, someone may be able to help with the following postmark. All I can make out is "VIC" for Victoria, the post office looks like "HA" followed by a backwards "N", a "T" may follow that, and then possibly another five letters?

If the backwards "N" is a listed comment under postmarks for certain cities or towns that may reduce the list. And if you know the site I mean it should be a breaze to find (please remind me!).

As an aside, is there a listing for postmarks with misspelt or backwards typeface? So many questions....

Misspelt and backwards letters are a rare thing in current postmarks. Mangled/damaged letters are more likely, strikes with missing or weak parts are common.

Barring someone turning up the website you noted, you can try a Google search for a partial town name, since the search engine attempts to autocomplete your typing by giving you a dropdown menu list of possibilities (unless you disabled the feature).

So here, give it as much known information as possible, first typing victoria australia. Then move the cursor back to the beginning and type ha and space. You will get a list of possible towns (and other stuff, too). Note that typing directly ha victoria australia gets you nothing; the search engine might assume you're making fun of Victoria and is waiting for more info. Still, by placing ha in front, the search engine can anticipate the normal order of a phrase (town/state/country) and can make suggestions. And you will find it will give you Hawthorn as one result.

John Becker - Thank you, easily see that now... I have postmarks with a backwards "N" on them and I just couldn't see it any other way.

hy-brasil - Thanks, I have tried that way before but it can be frustrating (and hit and miss), but again thanks for taking the time to explain. Cheers

langtounlad - Yes! That's the site I was thinking of, much appreciated.
