Just posting this in case it's helpful in the future to you or anyone else.
More than one might expect, the index at the back of any Scott worldwide catalog volume is really detailed and, in my opinion, really helpful. It's not just an index to that particular volume, but an index to all 6 (or now 12) volumes.
If the entry is not in the volume whose index you're looking in, then it'll point you to the right volume. If the entry *is* in the volume whose index you're looking in, then it'll give you the exact page number.
For instance, using the Upper Volta example, if you looked in volume 6, the index will point you to volume 1. Then, if you go to the index for volume 1 and look for Upper Volta, it'll give you the starting page number for where Upper Volta appears in Burkina Faso.
And you could look in the index for volumes 2-5, and it still would've directed you to volume 1. So you could always start out looking in the volume you have handiest.
It's actually simpler to do than my description of it.
It's a good way to look for a dead country that got incorporated into another country's listings, and it's kind of a stamp identifier as well. Often, if you're looking up a mystery stamp where you can't identify the country, usually you can look up that country name in its original language and the index will point you to the correct country. For countries and stamps which do not use the Roman alphabet, there's also a more visual identifier in the back of each volume to help guide you as well. (The visual identifier is the same in all 6 (12) volumes.)
I've found the index and the identifier to be really helpful to find the right country for some of those stray, elusive stamps! Highly recommended! |
