According to Michel, this stamp exists in 3 different types: Type I: With pearls in the 'sidebar' (Google translated...) and with two oblique strokes on the forehead Type II: Pearls as type II, without strokes on the forehead Type III: Without pearls and without the two oblique strokes on the forehead However, I cannot find any illustrations of the different types anywhere. Can anyone help? Mucho gracias

Jon, as thorough as Michel is, I find it extraordinary, that Gibbons and Scott both, have missed something as obvious as "pearls in the sidebars" Early SG has varieties a 2 colours Dark and Pale Brown Mine appears to be Dark, and is that 2 lines on the forehead? No listing of a Scott #78 in this varieties auction. http://www.sismondostamps.com/price...INA_SPEC.pdf |

I seem to have the same stamp as you- no oblique strokes on the forehead, and no evidence of pearls? On the side tablets.
The mystery deepens... |

Rod - Here's the German script in my Klassik Ubersee bis 1900, published 2017...
70 10 C braun (24,8,1890) 3,80 0,60
"MiNr 70 existiert in dri Typen: Type I Perlen in der Randleiste, zwei schraege* Striche auf der Stirn; Type II: ohne Striche auf der Stirn; Type III: ohne Perlen und Striche"
*schraege - Michel has an umlaut "a", which I wrote as "ae".
Correction Note: I first typed "stern" (star) rather than the correct "stirn" (forehead). |

Thanks Jim,
My Google translation
"MiNr 70 exists in three types: Type I beads in the rim, two slanted * lines on the star; Type II: without lines on the star; Type III: without beads and lines"
We have an Argentine specialist I think, in "Rein" If he does not respond, I may write to that varieties specialist on the link I posted.
I must try and find my Argentine duplicates, and see if I have any other examples.

I found an example with what appear to be the "pearls" and forehead strokes. Hope this helps. |

I had 4 duplicates. Found the "Pearls in the sidebars" ...albeit VERY faint. No Oblique lines that I can see. I'll try a deeper scan on the sidebar Quote: I found an example with what appear to be the "pearls" and forehead strokes. Hope this helps.
Nice find Seigaku ! We may assume the "Pearls" are only on darker brown shade. |

I have two examples of the brown color, and both show faint vertical squiggly lines on the sidebars (especially the right sidebar, facing the stamp), but the impression is not enough to give "pearls". I could call them partial Type IIs. I would still like to see a for sure "two oblique strokes of the forehead", a Type I at high resolution. |

Seigaku - nice high res- The oblique scar on the forehead - I thought it could be a paper flaw- but it looks real! Thanks! Type I |

Wow, again this forum - you gentlemen - amazes me Excellent response with useful images. Seems like we've found examples of all 3 types then. Thank you all, brilliant Strange none of the catalogs are providing any illustrations, but I guess one would need a specialized Argentinian. I'll simply use crop out's from your high-res images for my custom made pages, will suffice. |
