Hi all,

I have a new Scott Specialized catalog for classic era stamps but there are so many different colours in it that I don't know the difference between. Keep in mind that English is not my native language so I can't translate the difference between for example carmine and red from english to my language. This makes indentfying stamps very difficult.

So I was wondering if there is some sort of reference book for all the different colors listed in the Scott catalog (online or paper).

Thanks

Hi Vincent. Can you not use the Dutch dictionary when trying to translate the names of colors. I am Dutch and I do know that red is rood and that carmine is karmijn.

Peter, that is possible but then I still don't know if my interpretation of the color is correct. Actually I'm looking for something like this for Scott (in English)

Do you know if something like this exists for the Scott catalogs?

Yes. It's called Scott Specialized Color Guides for U.S. Stamps. However, it is out of print, so you'll have to search Amazon, ebay or sellers of out-of-print books. The last time I checked, it was priced around EUR50.

A classic in the field is "Encyclopedia of the Colors of United States Postage Stamps Volume I-IV," by R.H. White. It is also out of print but appears at auctions from time to time. Expect to pay EUR300 or more for a complete set.

Search this forum using "color guides" as terms - there are other threads on this.
