Never saw it before. Presumably there were other values on what ever it was. |

The " 2 1/2 per cent tax" cancel is an old friend, I wrote it up in TAR years ago, can anyone tell what it refers to? |

"Contemporary" meaning here that it is in a relatively modern typeface/ type style. All the examples you show look to be 19th Century typeface/ type style, to me at least. I assume you've already put a blacklight on the 60c just to be sure. |

If there are no known reference copies of the TICKET marking, and if there is not a way to date the age of the cancellation ink, how could an expertizer give a positive opinion about its authenticity? |

They can't, but the same can be said of tens of thousands of other unattributed cancels from that era. You can't just assume they all are bogus either. |

Quite a few "attributed" cancels haven't been found on piece either yet we accept that they are properly attributed all the time due to a variety of factors. Just because we haven't seen another TICKET marking doesn't immediately discount it as a fake. I recently went through something similar with a cancel. Virtually every expert who looked at it suggested it is most likely fake. After one reached out to some other collectors, we discovered that other examples are known and it is most likely real. Still no idea what it was used on though. |

Quote: Still no idea what it was used on though. It probably made sense at the time though, to those old-timey, now-long-dead-people. Jim |
