One of the lots I won on Kelleher today, I would like to place on extension and have it sent to the PF for a cert. I've never done this before. Can someone provide me with step-by-step process I have to take?

Ordinarily, you'd notify the auctioneer of your wish to secure a certification before bidding. |

If I'm bidding through SAN (my usual method of choice), I'll use the "Send message to auction floor" immediately upon winning the item in question, e.g., "Lot #14777 on extension to the Philatelic Foundation please." |

Can you ask for an extension once the auction is over?
If it it already too late to get an extension, you can still send the stamp to the PF and if the cert comes back bad, return it (within 4 weeks). Is that correct? |

RevHound, why not contact the auction house? Kelleher is very reputable and you can't go wrong with contacting them

Different auction houses have different rules for extension requests. You need to review the terms and conditions in the Kelleher catalog. The last time I put a lot on extension with Kelleher they sent the lot directly to the PF and then notified me when the lot came back from the PF. |

Actually I did that very thing. Tried to call them, but no answer. It is probably difficult to get a hold of them at this time. So I sent them an email. |

In my experience, with major auction houses, they actually send the item into the expertizing company(ies) rather than sending you the item(s) to send in. That's actually optimal, as they can send all the extensions from a given auction in together and defray shipping costs rather than you having to front that expense. It also saves a lot of time. |

That is very easy. Wish I had known about that in previous auctions. Live and learn. |

If an opinion of a mutually acceptable authority is desired, the period of time within which a lot must be received by Kelleher will be extended in accordance with Condition of Sale 7(g)
Authenticity. Any lot which is declared otherwise than genuine by a generally recognized authority is returnable, provided such lot is received by Kelleher within four weeks of the date of the auction.

can you get a cert back in 4 weeks? (actually less if the item is mailed to you first before you send it in) |

I'm pretty sure that provision is for when the BUYER wants to send the item for expertization rather than allowing Kelleher to send it in. This policy encourages buyers to have the auction house handle extensions, which IMO is in everyone's best interests.
Pretty much the only way to get 4-week turnaround is to pony up for the express/premium processing, and even then it's no certainty, depending on the nature of the item. |

Contacted Kelleher this morning. Was able to put the lot on extension without any problem. Thanks for the help. Here's hoping for a good outcome. |

Good, I'm glad it worked out for you. Personally, I've found Kelleher (and also Schuyler Rumsey) to be quite helpful and accommodating to buyer requests, both for information and images before the fact, and invoicing/shipping/extension issues after the fact.
Some other auction houses are not so helpful. |
