6-4, who votes? That's close, I wonder if this election was as contentious as some past elections have been rumored to be... |

Quote: 6-4, who votes? Well, according to the VERY FIRST line in the article, it is the members of the board ...
Today, the Board of Directors of the American Philatelic Society elected Robert "Bob" G. Zeigler to complete the term of President of the Board.

The APS Bylaws require the Board elect a President from its membership within 10 days of the vacancy. The two nominees were Zeigler and Director-at-Large and past President, Peter McCann. All members of the Board voted. While it was a contested election, both candidates spoke very positively before and after the meeting. |

"That's close." Or it's a "landslide" since the standard at least in U.S. presidential elections has always been that a winner with 60% or more of the vote has won a landslide. That's a joke, by the way.
But, you're right that of 10 directors, if one had changed his vote, it would have been a tie. And you can't be elected with a tie. I wonder what reservations the 4 who did not vote for the winner may have had? I doubt anyone is likely to talk about that, however! Generally, you rally around the winner.
It's also interesting that the article itself does't mention the vote numbers. I wonder why not? Wouldn't the members want to know? Is Scott English breaking the news of the numbers here first -- or are they published elsewhere, as well?
As an APS member for decades, I would certainly prefer presidents always be elected by general vote of the members -- with candidate statements being published in the journal, and so on. But I imagine this "replacement election" had to be different since they had to choose someone quickly. If elections fall entirely to the 10 directors, there might be some effort to achieve a vote closer to unanimity than winning by one vote. That's how they do it in Russia, anyway. That's also a joke -- but a more somber one. |

If you notice one member deferred from voting until all others had voted. I wonder why. Maybe it should have been a sealed vote. |

I posted to share the release we had posted on the APS Blog. The procedures adopted by the Board provided that if more than two candidates ran, the top two vote getters would run off in a second round. The intention was to get a majority of the Board to support a candidate. Fortunately in our history, the presidential replacement provision has been used sparingly. Quote: If you notice one member deferred from voting until all others had voted. I wonder why. Maybe it should have been a sealed vote. I don't speak for individual Board members, that is ultimately up to them. On Boards I have served on the past, some members have struggled to choose between two candidates for a number of reasons. As for a sealed ballot, that counters the openness policy established by the Board of recorded votes so that the membership can be aware of their record. I respect the decision by the Board, even if I wasn't the Executive Director. |

Scott, can the APS do anything about the ASDA allowing the fraudulent activity of Anthony's to continue unabated while proudly sporting their logo? Just wondering

Mike33: what threads are those? I haven't seen them either, but then I frequent only a few of the sub-boards on the site. |
