What's with the blazing bright paper on this stamp? It looks like some reproduction.

Soaked/bleached at some point? Cancel removed? The mind reels..

Cancel removed?

The patch just northwest of Jefferson's ear sure looks like the remains of a pen cancel to me -- either that or an undisclosed surface abrasion.

Why on earth would anybody buy these without a cert?

In my opinion, the scanner settings or image attributes, or both, have been adjusted with respect to color saturation and contrast to improve the appearance of the stamp and possibly hide a cancel. Note that white speckles are visible in the black background, which should be dead flat black. On my 24" monitor there appears to be cancel ink in the neck and forehead region and possibly in the upper right quadrant.
