Rather a curiosity.
Jacob Hole was the grandson of Rev. Thomas Hole of Buckinghamshire, England.
Jacob emigrated to the US in 1740

From what I can tell he married Mary (Thomas) Hole and had 13 children
He was in his 60's when he moved to Clarkson Ohio.

Here's the rub, none of the children were named "Thomas", yet a Thomas Hole (with the address of your cover) is noted, at that address, as a NATURALIST.

Can we date your cover at all?

I may have found him

It all depends on what type the stamps turn out to be. Value is what you paid for it.

I think I can see plate scratches on the right side, and of that's the case. Then they are 24's.

The image is just so bad, that it's almost impossible to tell here.

Good luck, either way...why don't you scan it when you get it and repost?

That's a perfectly nice cover.

3c paid the single letter rate under 3000 miles during the time of this mailing. Used between 1857-1861. The postmark might narrow it further.

I'm with Ray - I think I see side scratches but hard to be sure without a better scan.

Clearly Ty V's, #24.

Plated by Fortgang on the rear. He was a very accomplished plater of these back in the late 1950s, so I suspect all of his notes are accurate. I'll defer to someone else here to double check for you.

I'm not sure it is unusual - those are the stamps that were widely used at during that general point in time. Value is what you paid for it since that is what you paid. I am not familiar with variations of value in specific plates of these, but in general used Scott 24s seem to go for around $10 each on ebay all of the time. On cover I would expect a bit more. As for the post office, since it is a smaller one that would add some value but I am not sure it would be much as there are so many small post offices that you would need to find one of the few Indiana postal history collectors who would appreciate it to the point of paying a premium for it. Period covers from smaller post offices or that have other interesting postmarks that are franked with Scott 24 (I do not know which plates) seem to sell on ebay in the $10 to #30 range.

Hopefully you didn't pay the price for a strip of 3 #20's. Still a nice cover as you would usually see 1-3 cent stamp which paid the city to city rate. Any strip of the 1 cent Franklins is nice to own.

Hey Stallzer paid 20.00 AU, I was happy to pay that even for #24!
I didn't have a cover with them so I was happy to splurge a bit
it came with two 2 cent Columbian covers so I will sell them to re-coup a bit of cash! they commercial so maybe 5 bucks each.

$20 is an excellent price, especially in Australian dollars. I'd have offered it at $60-$75 and many bourse dealers would price it at $100.

I agree, had I seen it for that price I would have snatched it up as fast as I could.

The top stamp does exhibit the large curl variety that Fortgang points out - pos 52R8. See a comparison copy here:

http://www.slingshotvenus.com/Frank...Pos52R8.html

Its really a pretty cool variety.

The perfs on the top stamp are nibbed a bit but overall, a nice appearing cover with a good Ty V variety combined with a nice scarce town cancel. This cover would definitely be a highlight in an Indiana postal history collection.
