I'm getting back into collecting after 30 years away. To my chagrin, stamps have become self adhesive, and I get single stamps from dealers with the edging/margin from the sheet attached. Is it important to keep these attached? Sample attached
In your case it is important - it is a plate single. They are collected as such. I do not know if a non-plate single is being collected with selvedge Oh, and welcome to the forum.
Those peaks that jut over the edge of the backing paper have adhesive on them. If a tip gets folded over, I don't think you can unfold it without further damaging the stamp.
