Washed or bleached out or too much sun/light exposure I'd say.

Can you show a scan of the reverse, with a close up of the areas where the blue is missing.

Bobby, do you think if it was bleached the purple color would be altered also?

The cancel appears to be undamaged, so it must have been affected before the cancel was applied.

Would we be right that this was in a collection rather than something you purchased based on this trait?

Bleaching agent (usually hydrogen peroxide) carefully applied with eye-droppers will be able to do this. Naturally, the postmark will remain unchanged. If this was an earlier issue, I might say it was the work of Lucien Smeets, who perfected this art and taught Sperati most of the things he needed to know. It sems a bit too late for him. Does Floortrader (our resident forgeries expert) have anything to comment?

This is certainly a good and very visually striking forgery, and definitely worth collecting in its own right. If it was a genuine error, I certainly think we would know about it, as it is a stamp from one of the most studied countries in the world.

If you take a look at a bigger picture of the stamp, then the bottom curl of the 5 is still visible under the postmark.

Where has the original image gone? The thread is totally useless without it.

The OP has accidentally used the same name for multiple uploads in the same day. He should update each with a unique name.

Fascinating.
I have seen colours fade, change to other colours, and completely disappear,
I thought I had not seen a single colour in a bi-colour stamp, disappear.

I checked my "Light and Chemical damage" folder,
and there it was, another example.

Not my image, I have no idea from whence it came.
