The high bidder on one of my current lots decided my item was 'not what he wanted' and asked to cancel. when I did so the item bumped back down from $50+ to $10.50. I know stuff happens and am trying not to be too upset but gosh darn.. why couldn't he pull out yesterday or so? I doubt I will recover the former bid level.

Was there another option I could have followed?

Condolences appreciated.

I ought to consider pulling the lot and relisting next week. This guy was aggressive in bidding and by now has driven off the bidders I need now to get it back up to a realistic level. I'll wait to the last 15 minutes or so and then decide. I bet this is not the first time he's done this. Blocking him may be smart.

From ebay policies...

Quote:
You can't end your auction listing early, if:
There are fewer than 12 hours left in the listing, you've received bids, and you don't want to sell it to the highest bidder

Competitor sabotage comes to mind by this last minute move since it may prevent you from ending the auction as 51studebaker has quoted and may result in you having to sell something for much less. Not a fair move by a bidder against your listing.

My first thought was, "I wonder if Stamps1962 angered someone and they are getting 'even'."

I would have refused to cancel the bids if it was near the end of the auction. If they only made one bid and said it was a mistake, thats different. But if they are bidding aggressively then they know exactly what they are doing. I would cancel the auction regardless and block the bidder.

I would be unhappy...but I would "lick my wounds", immediately block this bidder, and not give it a second thought.

Last week I had a new bidder (with 13 feedbacks) who won 4 items for $700 and I was waiting for payment. He was bidding very aggressively and had driven 2 items way up and was high bidder on 7 more items, when I got his message saying he couldn't pay for last weeks purchases and please cancel all his bids for this week! I couldn't believe it!

I canceled his bids, blocked him and filed "Unpaid actions" against the 4 items he had already purchased. I figured he should at least get dinged with unpaid item strikes which might prevent him from bidding on other sellers auctions.

I canceled his bids with 24 hours to go and all my items ended up selling about where they were before cancelations.

And this is why I don't run auction listings... too many games being played.

Sabotage is definitely a possibility. I have no recollection of any dealings with this guy but, his feedback is below 60 so he might be using more than one Id. Here is his message, sent one hour and three minutes before closing:

'I would like to cancel my bid. Upon further inspection, it doesn't fit what Im looking for. My apologies for the inconvenience.'

That followed a bidding frenzy yesterday.

As things turned out I recovered much of the ground lost when his bids were factored out. He'd bid it up to $53 or so. I got $34 for it, not a disaster at least. He's being blocked. At best he's a loon.

I agree, the bidding looks fishy at best. He and the winning bidder potentially are the same person, trying to undercut the price by this tactic.

Yeah that occurred to me as well. Just strange.

Well now the guy who won looks to be a slowpoke payer. Yeah it's earl yet, it just closed yesterday afternoon but I invoiced him immediately and nothing yet. A lot of winners pay on Sunday evenings so probably he will. But I may poke him a bit if no word by Tuesday.

If you're suspicious about what is going on, then maybe the guy who won the auction, if genuine, is now suspicious, too, and that could explain his tardiness.

I have an auction that I won on 6/10. I paid immediately. Still has not been shipped yet. The auction listing said it could take up to 15 days, once payment cleared, to ship. Very frustrating.

I ship items immediately, many times driving them up to the post office to make sure they get out quickly.

I just don't understand the mindset here. I'd cancel but I want this item quite badly, so I guess I wait and see what happens.
