This morning I went to a local fleamarket and bought 2 shoe boxes of Dutch covers from the 50/60's.

I found this printed matter cover, it has a Brasil postmark. it is not perfectly clear. Has anyone seen this postmark before and can provide a clear impression?

The Westland mark might be from a coastal vessel from that era.

Thank you for your help.

Johan.

Would be helpful if you could lift the postmark, we need the 3rd letter if possible. F or R perhaps.

TA in locations in Brazil are numerous.

Date of issue of the stamp?

WESTLAND is curious in that we have an Aircraft facility in Somerset (I was born just opposite the aerodrome) and Bath is in Somerset. Not sure if there is a connection there.

The TA is for Tarde. This is a type of paquebot cover. Here's an identical cover as well for sale on ebay - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOLLAND...AOSwImRYiJO9

Wow, solved. Thank you very much.

The date should be 1952. And the example from Battlestamps seems to support that.

The stamp, part of the 1951 child welfare series, was issued 12 november 1951. It was valid untill the 31st of December 1952.

Johan,

I am still confused about TARDE
very little information on it, that I can see.
Translates to "afternoon"

Now I have seen a postcard with "1˝ TARDE"
I'll keep that query in the curiosity box to chase up.

Could not find any RMS Westland, that's a mystery too.

Hi,

In "K.N.S.M. The Royal Netherlands Steamship Company (1856-1981)" by Philip Cockrill, there is mention of an m.s. Westland that was in their fleet. Unfortunately it was built in 1975, so can't be the one from your cover.

If you google "m.s. Westland" you will find the website of Maritiem Digitaal NL which shows numerous photos of the m.s. Westland and if you look closely you will see that there are two different ships with that name. Although the photographs are often undated, it is clear that the other m.s. Westland sailed between Europe and South America in the 1940's and the 1950's.

The cover probably orginated on this second ship.
