All of the plate numbers that I have seen are in the color of the stamp that is being printed. These two items have red numbers printed/stamped in the margins, 299 and 300. I have searched the site for information but cannot find anything. I can speculate as to the reason but would like to know if anyone has any insight into the origins or purpose?
I agree that they are accounting numbers. But I do not think we know who applied them. Because of the similar nature of the numbers, it has also been proposed that some district collector offices may have applied them to ease the process of inventorying their stock.
It is common to find people who identify the numbers in the selvedge which are in a different color than the stamps as plate numbers. Recently judged an exhibit of Nepal at ROPEX with this erroneous identification. And it occurs daily on ebay listings as well. Especially common among state revenues.
