Hello from Germany,

anyone here, who knows that postal stationery card with a private print of the USS Maine, postally used just 2 weeks after the ship sunk in Havanna. Are these private prints in any catalogues in the USA? Is it rar or common?
Thanks for your help
Sven

I don't know the answer, but I am aware that there was feverish reaction to the sinking of the Maine in every newspaper and magazine in the country with photos and sketches of the ship. My guess is that there would have been enterprising people who were happy to make and sell large numbers of such privately made souvenirs to cash in on the event.

Having said that, the survival rate might not be all that high. In particular it might be very appealing to someone who collects the Battleship revenues of 1898.

The mailing from, New York was March 4, 1898. The USS Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898; War was declared on April 25, 1898. Someone who collects Spanish American War material or ephemera may have some knowledge on the item also.

This picture postcard was probably published a year or two later. I wonder how long the wreckage remained in Havana Harbor.
