Two questions...

(1) Where should I look in a typical stamp album for Ponta Delgada. It's clearly a Portuguese colony of some sort, but, beyond that, I have no idea.

(2) What is the red on this stamp: a strange cancellation, overprint, or just someone's writing on the stamp?

Thanks.

It's in the Azores - depending on the sophistication of the album, the Azores may be lumped in with other Portuguese colonies.

Ponta Delgada is in the Azores (as are Horta and Angra which also had their own stamps for a time).

I think the red writing says "paguciu" (paid) so it's probably a revenue use on a receipt.

I thought I had read that Colombus had visited Ponta Delgada on his return from the New World.
It appears I errored, he stopped at Santa Maria, not on Sao Miguel.

The name Azores was given by Gonçalo Velho Cabral who, with Diogo Silves, landed in Santa Maria in 1427. They mistook the many buzzards there for hawks, which are called "açores" in Portuguese.
