The first crusade began in 1095 and the crusaders took Jerusalem by storm

For the protection of regularly arriving pilgrims was organized several knightly associations. Thus appeared the Order of the Knights of Christ. Initially they were very poor and many knights had one horse for two.

King of Ierusalem kingdom Baldwin ll allocated them a place under the headquarters of the Order on the Temple Mount near Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Since then, they are called the Knights of the Temple - the Templars
The French abbot Bernard developed the charter and ideology of the Order

On the pedestal of the monument to Saint Bernard of Clairvaux is depicted Hugues de Payens, the main initiator and the first master of the Order of the Templars

PekingDuckDog, I'm always happy to share information.
Krak des Chevaliers in Syria. It is an 11th century castle and was used in the Crusades. It was one of the first castles to use concentric fortification, ie: concentric rings of defence that could all operate at the same time. It has two curtain walls and sits on a promontory.
