Where To Start With A Huge 70 Year Old Stamp Collection

StampManDan here,

I recently came into possession of a very large (11 bankers boxes) stamp collection.

The original owner was a sailor for the majority of his life and started collecting at an early age. The collection spans the globe, and 70 years of his life.

My intent is to sell these. I am hopeful that someone on here can point me in the right direction to start this process. Should I be selling them by the binder (all are categorized) or try to sell it all as one unit? I have the newest guides, and could price them out accordingly, but have no idea if this is an online sale, auction scenario, no clue.

I'll start the bidding at 10$ (US)

A first step would be to approach a local stamp club (if available) or an auction house to get a sense of potential value. Remember that most stamps are worth very little. If you aren't a collector, trying to break them down and sell them will be time-consuming and difficult, whilst selling whole albums on ebay is unlikely to be the best way of maximising value from a decent collection.

A good start would be to post some scans if possible of some representative portions of what you have. People on this forum are extremely helpful in leading you in the right direction. I agree with the auction house suggestion but given your geographical location that may not be that easy.

I concur with rogdcam, try and post 10-15 representative images and folks here will be better able to help.

I think that showing a few pages is a good idea but if StampManDan is new to stamps he might not have an idea of what pages he should be showing to this forum. A partial reconstruction of a penny black page and a page of 3c US commemoratives are light years apart.

I would suggest that StampManDan should tell us more on the contents of these boxes. Are there a lot of old covers in these boxes? etc

Early US, Canada, France and Great Britain could be a good start and if needed we could ask for further scans.

BTW, I'll raise the bid to $11 US.
