First flight cover by Lake Champlain Yacht Club FAM 1 New York to Montreal 1st October 1928 . Special flight cachet and 7am Albany 2 cancel Same day backstamp at Montreal.
Thanks for posting this nice example of this first flight cover. The way you worded your description someone might get a mistaken impression that the Lake Champlain Yacht Club was the one who flew the flight. As I am sure you and many others know this was flown by Canadian Colonial Airways, Inc. which was a subsidiary of Colonial Air Transport, Inc. This cover was flown on Foreign Air Mail Route 1 on the North bound flight on October 1, 1928. The aircraft began its flight at New York City and made a stop at Albany to pick up more mail. This cover is listed in the American Air Mail Catalog as F1-2 and there were 121 pounds of mail picked up there. There 180 pounds of mail already on board from dispatches from the New York City post office and the New York Air Field post office at Hadley Field where the plane took off. This are relatively common covers with a catalog value of $2.00. There was also a mail load flown back from Montreal to New York City with about 25,000 covers that also catalogs at $2.00. To have a complete set of all of the legs on this first flight one would need to obtain 4 different covers. Your example appears to have been mailed by someone with access to the stationery of the Yacht Club which makes it very attractive and colorful.
