I agree with your assessment. It is important to compartmentalize things by price range, aka "relative market". Overall the market sub 100k, seemed quite strong.
The sub 100k market can be analyzed every day. I am not sure what it has to do with this once every generation sale of philatelic icons of United States philately. The big ticket items are what set this sale apart from all of the other Siegel name sales.
Just curious, since a lot of people have crunched some numbers on this sale. Any basic idea as to what some bigger lots sold for vs what hale had paid?
The most recent edition of Linns (dated October 22nd) does a very good job of answering the question raised by Magguss above. Bottom line is that in several cases the prizes realized on the big ticket item were higher than what Gross paid for them but did not keep up with inflation. They called it a split verdict overall.
