When I saw the "Love 23" car, this car came to mind.
I have actually seen this car several times in Rhode Island,
just riding around. I believe it is a Camry. I was told that it was on ebay several times for I want to to say millions of dollars . It does say in its window "Not for Sale" with a phone # ??? Who,s to figure? One mans junk is an others treasure! I just googled the "Candy Cane Car".

In 1970, the campus was flush against Bancroft ... what are we looking at, and from where?

If that's the Campanile in the distance, then we are looking east/uphill on Bancroft, and the "U C Floral" shop & neighbors were acquired & destroyed.

Or, is this a highly 'stylized' view?

Things change so much. Honestly, I wouldn't have recognized it without the inscription at the top of the card.

We lived up the street on Durant Avenue when I was a grad student at Cal in the early 70's. We were quite surprised to see that Telegraph Avenue had "gone corporate" when we were back there about 12 years ago. All of the old "mom and pop" eateries and used book stores were gone.

I think you're right about it looking east on Bancroft, but you wouldn't be able to see the Campanile from this angle; it would be too far off to the left. The building visible beyond the greenery looks vaguely like International House (which opened in 1930), and that's where it would be in relation to this intersection.

Yes, the campus was later expanded out to Bancroft. Sather Gate was the south entrance to the campus when it was built in 1910.



There are even fewer used book stores there now.
