Rs227B - Medicine Wrapper

I just purchased this item but I cannot find much information on it. All I found was that they were issued from May of 1867 until May 31, 1876. 275,216 were printed on old paper and 163,534 on silk paper. This copy is on silk paper. No idea on what the survival rate is or the value of it. I am sure that I paid too much but could not find any others to compare prices with. I would appreciate any information to ease my mind.

Survival rate is moderate. They are around if one looks for them. The two cuts directly under the top printed area are on every wrapper, they were there to make folding the wrapper easy. This wrapper also comes with a foreign entry, although this is not an example of that. Anything up to full cat is fair for this particular example.

The three on EJ's site are specialty items, not to be confused with the normal wrappers.

Both of those links are for the special ultramarine or with the foreign entry. I had checked Eric's site and came up empty, for some reason. The one Eric has without the cuts is obviously an oddity (not being cut). What is the catalog value on this item? Thanks for the info on the cut, I was looking at that as a major flaw with the rub in the text.

Cat is $40. The rub is the issue, the creases appear to be from usage.

Ouch. Yea, I paid way too much. Wanting an item too much can is never a winning situation. Oh well. I should have followed my instincts and stopped when my snipe bid was passed. I looked for another one for sale and did not find any.

Barnes & Noble has a 2016 for $30.88

Yea, I have been considering going to the library to copy the M&M section of the Scott catalog. I hate to buy a copy that I only need 1 page of to determine value. Scott is not a very good source for realistic (actual buying) prices. It is a dreamer's book, to fantasize what they can sell their stamps for compared to what they can get them for. I need to find an online source that is more knowledgeable in the area of buying and selling these M&Ms than Scott and an online site that has a grip on mintage vs still existing copies.

If you're thinking you can get quality m&ms for tiny fractions of Scott the way so many treat front of book, you may be in for a rude awakening.

scott pricing on m and ms of all types is all over the map and has been for years. the condition statements about premiums for sound copies is very misleading as sound copies of many items were remaindered while others exist only with some degree of faulting due to usage. reference books about the private dies are around and not hard to find. see richard or erics sites for them. auction results will give a window into pricing for many scarce items as well as large collection remainders. experience over time is the best way to determine what is out there. you should look into joining the american revenue assn. if you are not already a member.

As has been explained before, there is no "realistic" price catalog for m&m's. There is only experience, because of how they were used. A nice example of some $10 cat stamps will cost $100, and some $100 cat stamps come nice every day.

I saw the one that sold for $52 on ebay recently, but it was the only one they showed. I do not know how far back the search goes. I searched the internet for a copy and did not find any for sale, including Eric's site. I spent a few hours searching for information on it. I found the info on the ultramarine and the foreign entry, which this was neither. Siegel only had the rare versions. I figure that a lot of these were destroyed when opened. Others had the top stamp part removed. So I was thinking that with only 163,000 made on silk, that there may not be many left whole. But I was thinking the same thing on the R056 match wrappers too until I found out that they are so numerous that people have quantities and are collecting dates on them. I was hoping someone knew of an online source with more accurate information than Scott would have.I am slowly getting a good M&M collection. I have 70 different so far, including paper types. I am slowly learning and will get burnt on a few other purchases but it is all part of the learning process.

jaxom, I am completely baffled by your reluctance to invest in the basic literature. You overspent on one item by more than the $30.88 needed to acquire the catalog noted a few posts back by redwoodrandy. Buy a catalog before you buy another stamp.
