Help ID Ing Fancy Cancel

Hi does anybody know what this cancel is? Can't figure it out! Thanks!

I think that it is just an ink blob.

Have to agree with rogdcam.

Looks a bit like a mushroom cloud though, but we know atomic bombs were not from that era.

I don't think it's an ink blob. I took that shot with a digital microscope with LEDs so it's much brighter that it actually is. Looking at it normally, it looks like a cancellation. I'm going to scan it and repost it to get some opinions.

Here it is scanned at 300DPI.While I'm at it, does anybody know what the second one is? It looks like a bird to me, although it looks very different when it's scanned. Thanks for your help!

I think it might be an elephant. Looks that way rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Your thoughts anyone?

Probably just a smudgy duplex on the bottom item and a smudgy cork on the top one.

Fancy cancels from this era are rare. I have a scarab on a 2c carmine, that's it. Anyone else have this or any other fancy cancel?

And stars are only marginally "fancy" to some specialists.

Is there a good website for identifying fancy cancels?


I have a strange Christmas tree ? Cancel and finding info has been a challenge.

Quite often looking at some of these blob cancels is like taking Rorschach tests. Everyone has something which comes to mind, whether it's really there or not.

Psychologically, we want to identify what we see as something which our experiences can relate to. These visual cues can lead us down many paths.

The cancel on the two cent is easy, though. This is a partial and overinked double oval cancel.

Our brains always work VERY hard to detect patterns, and our brains will 'fill in' any missing information in an effort to pattern match.

In facial recognition, it is well proven that we really struggle trying to recognize a face upside down. Our brains, working hard to 'make sense' of patterns, will override or fill in information to that seems to make the most sense to us.
