I think this machine cancel is a Leavitt experimental. Was looking for some help if I am correct and any idea of value. The glassine envelope it is in has noted as 'rare' Type X-3 Die II. I thought types and die cuts were for postal envelopes and not machine cancels.

You are correct. This is listed by Cole:
http://www.stampsmarter.com/feature...sicView.html
search by subject and select "Machine"

Wait for the real machine cancel experts to check in. The type has nothing in common with postal stationery catalog numbers, it's someone else's catalog system. The Cole database has its own number for this and it's something different altogether. Again, the experts may probably know who assigned this number/designation.

A nice cover!

X3 is the type in Robert Payne's "Thomas Leavitt: His History and Postal Markings 1875-1892", which is the standard reference for Leavitt markings. This is indeed one of the Leavitt experimentals, and it's a nice item (retail a couple hundred dollars but not a lot of buyers).

The exhibit Rodgcam linked to is Bill Barlow's Boston exhibit, which is an easier way to learn about these markings than the book.

Thanks for the information. I did check Bill Barlow's Boston exhibit and found some good information. Also checked out a few other links on their site and found some informative PDF's. I even have Russell Hanmer 'Collectors Guide to Machine Postmarks' and can't id some of my early machine cancels.

Where is the center hub with date ? This might have gone through the postal system but a cover without date ~ this might have been a test for cancel machine done by favour ~ which might make this cover worth something if it in fact made it through the postal system

Perfectly normal and proper to have the date removed from the cancel as a piece of 3rd class mail (note the 1 cent rate), likely containing an ad or price sheet of some sort.
