This has been a very difficult item to find (without breaking the bank). I'm hoping in the future I can luck into an even better version of it. Having said that, I'm really happy to have this folded letter.

Nice cover. Folded, as lots of mail was. Nicely tied pair to intact cover.
Not everyone can afford caviar, have to settle for what our budgets allow us to afford. Enjoy!

stampcrow - way to go. That's the scarce and highly sought after NYC 1853 year date. It was used coincident with the Crystal Palace exhibition.
Your cover is overweight so it cost a double 3c rate to mail. |

No1philatelist, my "stampcrow" moniker is pretty descriptive of my collecting style, and it's mostly because of my budget.
But... the 1851-57 3 cent issue is a classic that can be accumulated with a small wallet, consistent effort and a lot of help from more knowledgeable people willing to help.
OK what's next...? |

Given that the stamp was issued in 51, why would a 53 datestamp be so tough to find? Unless few datestamps were being used in general. |

According to Simpson/Alexander there are only 2 cities that used datestamps in 1853 NYC and Greenville Me. It is the 1st year NYC used a date stamp and it has a rarity of 4/10.
Nice cover!

I forget the exact date range of the NYC 1853 year date, but it was about 2 weeks - maybe a few more days.
In general, year-dated CDS's from the first part of the 1850s are tough to find. The first part of the 1850s, year-dated CDS's just weren't used. Around 1856 they started to become ubiquitous, and kind of went from there. 1855 year dates are out there, but a bit hard to find.
I do wonder if the compulsory pre-payment by stamps mandated by the 1855 postal rate change somehow spurred the proliferation of year-dated CDS's afterwards. Prior to that, they are very very scarce. There are some California (Sonora) straightlines from 1851 and maybe 1852, that are scarce, but not CDSs. |

I searched the Chronicle and found an article by Hunter M Thomas, in it he states the New York 1853 CDS was in use for 15 days.
