The first mistake is to accept a catalog price as a true market indicator. Most dealers love catalog prices so there must be a good reason.

The ONLY time I look at catalogue value is for reference when buying. I then compare it with on line sites like ebay.

Since I never sell any of my stamps I don't have to "keep up" with catalogue values.

What do I do with my duplicates? I donate them to Veterans Charities and the like.

I remember my father telling me 60+ years ago that one-third of CV was a reasonable value for most stamps. So things haven't changed all that much, in spite Stanley Gibbons' attempts.
