Hello all

I accidentally noticed that this stamp, Scott 596, SG 521, has two image sizes. All that my Scott, SG and stampworld say is that there's a lithography version and engraved version.

This image size difference reminds me of the Italian Syracusean Coin 3 sets, with one set having smaller images.

So, how come the size "doesn't matter" and not referred to?
Is this size difference apply to other stamps in this series and I happen to have only one?
Does it have to do with the printing method, lithography and engraved?

Thanks, vayolene, I saw that site before posting and it confused me further:
It indeed the only place that refers to the image size, but it says that both of them were printed in recess, so the size isn't related to the printing method.
How many sets were? How many size differences are, and why only this stamp?

The South African Colour Catalogue lists this stamp as 525 recess printed 15th July 1982. Stamp 525a also recess printed 9th Feb 1983 is listed as "reduced size".
Both stamps are catalogued at R1 (less than 10c US) either MNH or used.

Thanks, Clive.
Does the catalog say if other stamps in this series were printed in reduced image size, and how many sets were?
According to stampworld, there were two sets printed in July 1982, one of them engraved. Then came a third set in 1983?

Hi Rob,
This series, the 4th definitive issue was issued 15th July 1982. The design was 28x20mm. The 1c,2c,5c & 10c were also issued as coil stamps (imperforate side edges). Some denominations were recess printed, others litho.
Further denominations, the 11c,12c,14c & 16c, were added between 1984 and 1987.

Most of the later reprints as well as the new denominations were 1mm smaller than the original issue.
If you have access to the SG "Southern And Central Africa" catalogue there is a paragraph at the end of the listing for these stamps that gives more detail

Thank you Clive and Roberto.
have only the general SG catalog, so I'll rely on what you two have shared here.
