wkusau - THANKS for reviewing and your suggestion. I'm not sure the first letter is a "C" but the rest fits and that's better than I have been able to come up with in over several weeks of trying to make-out the name.

Many THANKS again!!
Hal

Coldwater, Kansas seems correct to my eye (and they had a post office in 1885)

"Coldwater, Kan" makes sense to me also. And Kansas borders Missouri that also makes sense since it was not uncommon for people to not live overly far away from friends and family, though of course sometimes they did. This being a possible case of them not living too far away makes Kansas a good possibility.

I agree with Richard & Kimo with Coldwater, Kans.
From Jim Forte list, the PO opened there in 1884, thus very logical to have manuscript postmark.

Add: One of the challenges of using electronic lists such as Jim Forte's is cases like Coldwater vs Cold Water and remembering that under postmaster Wanamaker's name standardizations of c1893-94 many 2-word town names were combined, burgh often becoming burg, etc. Of course some sellers like to call (exploit?) the earlier spellings a DPO and charge more.

Thanks Kimo & John. I was searching this morning (by state) on Forte's site this morning. It is a great tool -- when you can read the letter of a manuscript! I think I need new glasses... or maybe my eyes are just shot!

The line above is from the last word above line, a fancy swirl

I would suggest rather ... the line going through the top of the H of Blytheville is the (somewhat misplaced) stroke crossing the T. Similarly, the stroke crossing the T in Carter is high and also to the right. The penmanship of the writer is consistent.
