Can anyone help me with this stamp? It has an 8 denomination and a machine cancel. I can not find it catalogued anywhere. It may be some special private Bordeaux postage.

Any thoughts?

The "denomination" is likely to refer to the number of gold medals won. Looks like a label steamed from a bottle or crate.

Geof,

Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking that it could have been attached to a bottle, but these liquor stamps are usually torn apart when the drunkard pops the cork or twists off the cap!!! Been there and done that. I had a couple of Canadian liquor bottle tax stamps from the depression and sold them for great prices recently as they were not overly damaged.

This stamp look liked a different beast and may have been very well attached to a box, part of a bottle (not over the cork), or even to a barrel of wine. Your comment about the 8 makes sense. I just noticed that the "Medailles d'Or in pluralized (not Medaille d'Or), so the 8 most probably refers to multiple wine awards for the winery, as you point out. The "cancellation mark" is a bit unusual as why would this stamp have that on it. Maybe for taxation purposes. Maybe for a mark as the bottle of wine or box of wine having been sold.

I showed this to the Chateaux Pavie management in France and they had never seen anything like it before. Would be nice to have some precise knowledge.

Probably dates from 1896 onwards.
Bouffard was awarded a Gold Medal in 1896 for his wine husbandry
and for the treatment of Phylloxera (Still a problem in Wine grapes in Victoria Australia in 2017)

I generally do not like offering prices. It's kind of undignified for Philately.
I do quote Catalogue prices when appropriate.
My source of pricing for sale is ebay in the main.

Cinderellas have risen markedly over the past 10 years, I used to get snoots when showing my desire for them then.

The Blue example is for sale at 5 euros, 8 dollars Aust. which is high in my opinion. If you found a Viticulture collector, you may get a similar amount.
I usually pay $8 for a Hagner sheet of Cinderellas (20 or so), but have not won a bid for months.
Perhaps try 8 dollars and ask for offers?
My appraisal would be $2-$4 (always happy to be proven wrong)

Yes, but with differing perspectives.
I'll happily send all "what's it worth" queries your way,
yet I don't see you answering many before now.......?
Rather than snipe, perhaps you could offer the poster your appraisal?

A rather undignified reply, for a philatelist!

Given the condition of the originally posted stamp, it 'aint worth much...

I will give you a price --about a dollar or two to a general Cinderella collector .It is not in good condition and just a space filler .You can hope to find a specialise in French Cinderella or a vine stamp collector but that could take weeks or months .

Much thanks to everyone for their fantastic help on this stamp. I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out with no success. My stamp is in beat up condition, however, my experience with liquor stamps, they are usually in pretty rough condition. Too much drinking going on and things get messy. LOL
