TXSTAMP---I purchased by mistake 17 large cartons [I thought from the picture on SAN ,it was 6 cartons on a pallet ] ,me and a friend were going to make up mixture lots and small country collections ,the plan was that I get to pick out what I wanted and he was going to sell it and split the profits 50/50.
He lives on a disability check and it was a way for him to add to his income .So both of us would have a few days of entertaintment and I would get extra stamps . What came was 17 large cartons from Kelleher for a shipping cost of $240.00 for 477 lbs to Florida .
Wife went nuts when the FEDEX truck delivered ,it is now down to 4 boxes at my home . I really enjoyed the past 2 months and got tons of material that I plan to keep and have months of work in front of me . The good news I told my partner since I got nice stuff and lots of enjoyment he could take 100% of what he sells .
Now after this whole affair he wants me in the spring to drive up North and bring back a lot more boxes .....not sure I want to do it .....but may change my mind later on ....IT WAS A FUN EXPERIENCE . |

I love it. Your single most recent purchase is bigger than my entire collection. |

In September Kelleher sent me a 6 box, 232 lb lot and charged me $120. I'm in Fl but they shipped to NY so maybe the shipping charge was based on the distance from CT to NY They ended up shipping it twice for $120 which I thought was pretty reasonable.

Ha ha, I know the feeling. My poor home office is stuffed floor-to-ceiling with boxes; I've had to sit out a few tempting sales the last couple months just to get the material I already have more organized. Family's OK with one room being filled with stamp boxes; not so sure they'd be thrilled if I let it overflow into the hallway or another room. Quote:IMO buying collections at auction or on ebay taking the stamps you need and reselling the collections on ebay is one of the best ways to build a collection. The interest in collections valued at less than $1000 is quite strong as long as they open with a low or reasonable starting bid. This is true. Buy a decent country collection (or world collection in several albums), pick out the stamps you need, and put the remainder on ebay starting at $1, and you can recoup much (sometimes all!) of the purchase price. At least once your collection is at the point where you only need to remove some of the good stuff, leaving nice material in your ebay lot, it works very well. |

When ebay began, I tried to buy small lots of Canada, pick out the one or two stamps I needed, and sell the remainder for at least what I paid.....thus building my collection for free. It worked fairly well until I got to the higher priced items. |

ebay does not enter the equation for me whether buying or selling. The traditional auction house work very well for both. |

I am jealous and a little scared how exciting that stack of albums looks to me. I want to do the same. Please share what you find with us. Enjoy the hunting. |

I know that buying entire collections, picking what you want and resell is the way to go.
Unfortunately my limited budget prevents me from doing that but it sure looks like a lot of fun. |

Isn't it funny that we find even a temporary place to put these purchases every time? Loads of fun to be had, happy hunting! |

If I purchased a 17 carton lot, my wife would find a temporary place to put me. |

rogdcam: please do share with us your findings. Ten years ago, I would have loved getting such a hoard. Nowadays, I cringe at having that much new stuff, when I can't find time to get to what I still have.
91stang said two months of work. Considering that I'm going through and giving away stuff I bought in the 1980s, but didn't fully assimilate.......... I remain very thankful that the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library is in town and can take my dups as a donation for others to enjoy.. |

Having purchase many large lots over many years the key is to be organized and sort everything into workable groups .
Those 17 cartons received from the stamp auction firm were sorted and re-organized within a week to 10 days . The trash dumpster in the garage got maxed out the first week . The second week it was only half filled .I went out to Lowe's Hardware store and purchased about $40.00 in plastic containers and masking tape to write labels on each container as I sorted. Some containers filled fast and cause me to go back to the store and purchase large containers ,it was easy to move around the labels as different ones filled up .
More later on how I sorted a bulk lot into reasonable and workable units . |
